  14. <p>    DIED. Georges Simenon, 86, world-renowned mystery writer
  15. who created the fictional police inspector Maigret; in
  16. Lausanne, Switzerland. Simenon, who once boasted that he could
  17. bang out a novel in three days, published more than 400 novels
  18. under his own name and 17 pseudonyms. Because of his insight and
  19. prolific output, he was hailed as the Balzac of his time.
  20. Simenon's works sold more than 600 million copies in 57
  21. languages and spawned numerous films. "I'm not an intellectual
  22. at all," he told an interviewer in 1963. "I've never thought
  23. through a novel, I've felt it. I've never known where my
  24. characters would lead me."
